Professor meets Pupil Voice. CSE and Safeguarding.

Really great to welcome Professor Maggie Atkinson to Wirral Hospitals School, Joseph Paxton Campus, yesterday.

Maggie (formerly Childrens' Commisioner for England) was on Wirral in her safeguarding role and also launching a conference. We were immensely grateful that she gave us two hours of her time to tour the school, meet staff and young people and to hold an-in depth discussion with a group of Year 10's.

Whilst the Year 10's learnt much from what 'Prof Maggie' had to say ... and learnt how you become a Professor (aspirational!) they were also able to share with her the pressures and influences, local and national, they experience as teenagers. They were able to identify and verbalise 'risky areas' (geographically), 'risky activities' and equally importantly, explore strategies, verbalise their own 'helplines and support systems' and relate their personal experiences to illustrate this. They passed our schools' ongoing 'test' with flying colours ... "name at least three people you can go to for help when everything seems to be going wrong".

Great to see a group of our students, (many of whom are vulnerable and potentially at risk, many with Social Communication difficulties co-morbid with Autism) presenting so confidently and thoughtfully to a VIP. Self-esteem / confidence-building and promoting further discussion and feedback from them today.
